How To Convey Confidence

 

Do Acupuncturists really need any special communication tips?

 

Short answer? Absolutely.

 

Long answer? 

 

Think of it this way…

 

You walk into a car dealership and ask how reliable the car you're thinking about buying is. Then the salesperson says something like…

 

“This car will last you a million miles. It's been ranked top ten in reliability the last ten years. You don't have to worry about anything with this car. 

 

Now, you walk into another dealership and ask the same question and the salesperson says…

 

“Well, it really depends on how you drive the car. Do you put many miles on the car? Do you drive it in the snow? That's really hard on the car. Oh, and you have to do your part. You have to maintain the car and do your part.”

 

Which dealership would you feel more confident buying from?

 

Obvious, right?

 

But why am I talking about cars when I'm teaching how to run a successful acupuncture business? 

 

Well, because most acupuncturists sound a lot more like the second dealership than the first one. 

 

Most Acupuncturists do not communicate in a way that instills confidence in patients. And the reason for this passive style of communication is simply because they were not taught differently. 

 

Remember that patients are coming to you with a problem because they believe you are the professional… that you can help them get better. The only way to convey that reassurance is to communicate precisely and confidently. 

 

Think about it…

 

When you go to a doctor, do they say, “well, try the antibiotic for a couple of days and see how it works for you. Oh, and here's some research you can take home and look at it before you try it?”

 

Of course not.

 

The way it works is… you come to a doctor with your problem, you get a definite instruction on what to do, and you do what you’re told. 

 

That is what patients are used to… 

 

That’s the type of communication they respond to. It's as simple as that.
